NEXT CLUB MEETING:  March 9th, 2017

Club Meetings:  The Federal Way Amateur Radio Club meets on the Second Thursday of the month at the Federal Way Public Schools Support  Services Center at 7pm.  The FWPS SSC is located at 1211 South 332nd Street  in Federal Way which is the new facility at the south end of Celebration Park, and just east of the FW Community Center.  All are welcome to attend, and no license required.

At our last club meeting...  The guest speakers for our February 9th club meeting were a trio of students from the Federal Way Public School District's Technology Access Foundation (TAF) Academy.  The TAF Academy is a 6th to 12th grade STEM-focused public school co-managed by Federal Way Public Schools and Technology Access Foundation. The academy provides a rigorous and relevant learning environment rooted in project-based learning practices for today’s college-bound students.  Led by their teacher Sam Riser (KI7JXS), the three eighth graders presented their award-winning ham radio-based project on how the length and material of an antenna affects a transmitter’s signal strength.  Many thanks to club's own Ellen (KE7MPN) and Craig (KE7MPM) for providing technical guidance to the girls.

Hey folks, your favorite time of the year is coming soon.  We will be Springing Forward and advancing our clocks one hour to Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) .  Daylight saving time in the United States is the practice of setting the clock forward by one hour during the warmer part of the year, so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.  Please advance your clocks one hour when you go to bed on Saturday March 11th.  While you are running around adjusting your clocks, you might as well change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Pacific Daylight Time:
Starts at 2am on the 2nd Sunday in March.
After the time change we will be -7 Hours to UTC.

The club's Emergency Communications Response Team (ECRT) is scheduled to meet again on Thursday March 16th at 7pm at the South King Fire & Rescue's Station 62.  The ECRT Team is the public service aspect of the Federal Way Amateur Radio Club. The ECRT provides backup radio communications and other support to governmental and civic agencies in the times of emergency or disaster. Some of the ECRT team members also support other non-emergent public service functions such as the Federal Way Festival Days parade and activities, as well as many of the Seafair events in the Puget Sound area.

The 19th annual Communications Academy is scheduled to take place on the weekend of April 22nd & 23rd at the South Seattle College.  Communications Academy is two days of training and information on various aspects of emergency communications. The Communications Academy is open to anyone with an interest in emergency communications, volunteer or professional. The presentations are designed to promote the development of knowledgeable, skilled emergency communicators who will support their local communities during a disaster or emergency response.  The Communications Academy includes training sessions, static displays, and vendor booths.
